In August of 2010, Latonya Garth seriously contemplated forming a mentoring program to transform the lives of young ladies in the Detroit area. It would be effective in allowing young ladies to have a new perspective and outlook on the ways in which they choose to live their lives. She envisioned a group of underprivileged young ladies with limited goals finding their ways to success, living their lives freely and most importantly, having a peace of mind because they have developed from within. By knowing their identity and who they want to become, young girls could plant the same seed in others. This was Latonya’s dream, and with the help of several close friends, the I.M.A.G.IN.E. Mentoring Program was formed on September 9, 2010 and has since been successful in meeting the needs of several young ladies in the Detroit community. The I.M.A.G.I.N.E. Mentoring Program was a desire that was put on Latonya’s heart. After several life altering situations that she encountered over past years, Latonya determined the best way to get through her own issues was to help someone else through theirs.

“It is important to have a support system; it just makes life so much easier.”

~Latonya Garth~

The I.M.A.G.I.N.E. Mentoring Program has partnered with several businesses and organizations to impact the youth in the community. Those partnerships include:

  • City of Detroit Media Services

  • I AM A PRIORITY

  • You Gotta Be You Organization

  • Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church

  • City Connect

  • Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority

  • Connect Detroit

  • Michigan State University

  • The Detroit Police Department’s 10th precinct

  • Legacy Charter Academy

  • Michigan Collegiate High School

  • Detroit School of Arts

  • West Village Academy and a host of high schools throughout the Detroit and Metro-Detroit area

It really takes a village to break the barriers of low self-esteem and to help young ladies become better. Together with these partners and others to come, the dream of helping young ladies carry themselves as the queens and to take all they have learned and help someone else along the way will be achieved one person at a time.
